As a travel advisor (and a mom!), nothing informs my recommendations quite like my own experiences. This past fall, I traded in the Indiana chill for some sun and splash with my 12-year-old son, Jaxon, at the Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun. Was it worth it for a quick family getaway? Here’s my no-holds-barred rundown—parent to parent, traveler to traveler.
**Please note that we were not "Diamond Club" level so my experience is based on standard level rooms, services, and inclusions. If you do have questions about Diamond Club, I can still assist you, but I am not going to address it in my review today.
Seamless Travel & First Impressions
We hit the ground running—literally! Our early flight from O’Hare landed us in Mexico by lunchtime, and we were poolside by mid-afternoon. Check-in was a breeze, though our room wasn’t quite ready at first (par for the course during busy check-in hours). No biggie—the buffet filled us up, and by the time we finished, our Luxury Junior Suite was waiting.
Now, real talk: I’m a big fan of modern touches, but this bathroom layout had me scratching my head. It wasn’t quite as private or functional as I’d hoped… but hey, everything else in the room hit the comfort mark: cool A/C, cozy beds, great Wi-Fi, and plenty of space for the two of us. Sometimes, travel is about rolling with the quirks!
@ck_getaways Take a quick room tour of a luxury junior suite at Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun! My son and I enjoyed our vacation and aside from some complaints about the bathroom which I'll share separately, we loved the room as well! Would we stay here again? Yes. If you have questions, please ask! I can also help you get booked for this resort at no extra cost if you would like professional travel agent services to help you every step of the way! #cancunresorts #allinclusiveresort #roomtour #royalton #mexicovacation @Royalton Resorts

Waterpark Glee & All-Inclusive Fun
The on-site waterpark is every kid’s (and let’s be honest, every parent’s) dream: slides galore, a winding lazy river, and enough splash to wear out even the most active tweens. Jaxon made it his mission to try every slide! I lost count of our combined steps and calories burned; activity trackers don’t lie—this is a vacation that gets you moving!
When we needed a breather, we’d hit the lazy river or the pool, and on more “chill” days, we sampled activities from tennis to pickleball (turns out we have hidden athletic skills). I loved the flexibility—each day was “choose your own adventure,” and my son relished being in charge of our schedule.
More real talk: A number of the big water slides require the use of a two person inner tube. So just to be clear, for some slides you do need two people in order to be able to go down them. There is also one that requires a four person raft and you need to have four people. Jaxon joined a family of three several times for that particular slide and had a blast! As for me, I did many of the slides with him and after a few days I had a few black and blue spots on my backside but man were they fun!
And as a note for those who like to be prepared for anything, there were times when all of the inner tubes were being used so we did have to wait between slides a few times, but never long. The staff made sure that everyone took turns when the inner tubes were all in use. At the lazy river, sometimes you're just out of luck when all of the floaties are in use. I brought my own from home which came in super handy in both the lazy river AND the pools.
Dining & Entertainment for Real Families
One hallmark of Royalton Splash Cancun? Variety meets convenience. Over our stay, we hopped from lunchtime pizza and poolside burgers to sit-down dinners at The Cave and Zen Teppanyaki. The teppan chef’s antics had us laughing and wide-eyed, and the food was delicious. Another night, we capped things off at the buffet with international favorites—and maybe one (or three) stops for gelato along the way.
After-dinner options didn’t disappoint either—on our first night, we lost spectacularly at trivia, but that didn’t stop us from sampling other evening shows and even contemplating the silent disco (spoiler: after all that activity, my “tween boss” was snoozing early!).
Now for the less-than-glowing part of this particular part of the review: The buffet food was good, but the service was hit or miss. Twice we visited and were never offered water or anything to drink, and the other times they helped us right away. It was odd.
Independent Time & Relaxation (for Kids AND Parents)
Let me tell you—a resort kids’ club is pure gold. Jaxon adored the independence, diving into new activities and making friends. Meanwhile, I managed to sneak off to the beach for some much-needed quiet reading time and even caught up on a little work. That mix of togetherness and personal space? Total vacation magic.
And on our final full day, with Jaxon sad to leave and trying to check off every last bit of fun, we squeezed in a game of bowling (small extra cost, absolutely worth it), grabbed snacks at the food truck, and spent one more afternoon at the waterpark before heading to dinner. Even after four full days, he was “sad to leave”—sign of a true winner!
My Honest, Agent-Parent Verdict
If you want an all-in, no-fuss, no-surprise-cost family getaway that’s actually parent-approved, Royalton Splash Cancun is a winner. Are there room quirks? Sure. Will you hit your step goal… and then some? Most likely! But the real value is in how much you get for your dollar: endless things to do, freedom for both kids and adults, and memories you just can’t put a price tag on.
When I say I recommend this resort for families, it’s because I’ve lived it—“choose your own adventure” days, comfortable rooms, happy taste buds, and a tween who didn’t want to leave.
Reasons NOT to book this resort (Because there are some, depending on your preferences and expectations):
- This is not a place where the beach is front and center. The beach is ok but it was not my favorite and if you go during sargassum season just keep in mind that the resort can not control mother nature. Go enjoy the other amenities if it is bad when you are there.
- If you are expecting luxury, true 5-star accommodations and services, this is not the place for you. It's price point should tell you that, but I feel like I need to reiterate. The rooms are comfortable, the food is average for an all-inclusive, and the service we received was a mix of outstanding and non-existent.
- If you are not "pool people" or "waterslide people" I personally feel like you'd have a bad time as there is a big focus on those things (probably why it's named includes the word "Splash").
